American Gods is an American fantasy series based on the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman. The epochal story tells of the revenge campaign of some gods and mythical heroes against the mass media of America.

American Gods is set in a world where gods and mythical beings exist solely because humanity believes in them. However, the more enlightened the mortal species became, the more the influence of those supernatural creatures disappeared, which without the belief of humans progressively faded from the consciousness of world history. In the media — supported by new technologies — people find new gods and in capitalism a suitable creed. No wonder the old gods are desperately trying to find a way to stay relevant — even if the relentless competition ends in a grim vengeance.

The protagonist of the story is Shadow, a silent observer of the events taking place, who is in jail because of a robbery that went terribly wrong. A tragic circumstance helps him to be released from prison early: his wife dies in a car accident with his best friend. Shortly thereafter, Shadow makes the acquaintance of Mr. Wednesday, who hires him as a bodyguard. It quickly turns out, however, that that certain Mr. Wednesday knows a lot more about Shadow and his past than he does himself. In addition, the encounter with a leprechaun named Mad Sweeney challenges Shadow’s faith: his wife, Laura, in transformed form to new life.

Shadow (Ricky Whittle) finds himself in jail due to a devastating robbery at the beginning of the plot, but unexpectedly regains his freedom with the death of his wife and best friend. He then takes a job as a bodyguard and immediately finds himself in the midst of a huge conflict between humans and gods.

Laura (Emily Browning) is Shadow’s wife and sees him go to prison for several years — not knowing that her own death will be responsible for his early release. Later, thanks to a magic gold coin, she finds her way back to Shadow, albeit not in person. Instead, she accompanies Shadow as a revenant on his adventures.

At first glance, Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) seems to be an unpredictable contemporary who earns a living as a con artist. In truth, Mr. Wednesday hides none other than Odin, the god of knowledge and wisdom. His plan is to unite the old gods against the new in a decisive battle.

The third season of «American Gods» has started, but does not offer anything for passionate binge watchers, because the episodes appear weekly.

Fortunately, according to Neil Gaiman’s book, the series does not end after the third season, Starzplay has already ordered a sequel in the form of «American Gods» season 4.

Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) has now learned that his mysterious employer, Mr. Wednesday, is not only the god Odin, but also his biological father. In the third season he first tries to suppress his fate and settles in the snowy town of Lakeside, Wisconsin. From now on he wants to go his own way, far away from the influence of his father. In the future he only wants to be guided by the gods of his black ancestors, the Orishas. But he quickly realizes that his idyllic town has very dark secrets and that it is not possible to simply ignore that you are a god. «American Gods» Season 3: New showrunner found
Nobody wanted negative headlines about showrunner wear on the show anymore. After Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were replaced by Jesse Alexander for the second season, Jesse Alexander was asked to quit his job in the course of the production of the second season. The bad word «fired» was avoided, but in the end he was asked not to be seen on the set. He was also no longer involved in the editing process.
